Post independence, the coaches were parked in the state for a quarter of a century till 1981-82. Later, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways launched a special heritage tourist train that offers a memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan.
The royal history of the coaches inspired the name “Palace on Wheels”. Eventually, various infrastructural changes were amended in the coaches, whilst keeping the rich aura of the interior alive.
In late 1980s, the original passengers? saloons of Ex Maharajas were replaced by Metre Gauge train that had AC Cabins with sharing bathrooms. A Broad Guage version of the Palace On Wheels train was introduced in 1996, where all the Cabins had private attached bathrooms.
