History of the Train

Travelling back in time, we find that the rulers of the princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, and the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India used to travel by these luxurious coaches. Post independence, the coaches were parked in the state for a quarter of a century till 1981-82. Later, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways launched a special heritage tourist train that offers a memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan.

The royal history of the coaches inspired the name “Palace on Wheels”. Eventually, various infrastructural changes were amended in the coaches, whilst keeping the rich aura of the interior alive.

In late 1980s, the original passengers? saloons of Ex Maharajas were replaced by Metre Gauge train that had AC Cabins with sharing bathrooms. A Broad Guage version of the Palace On Wheels train was introduced in 1996, where all the Cabins had private attached bathrooms.

Finally, in September 2017, new train carriages were introduced that are more spacious. Now guests have the option to book Deluxe or Super Deluxe Cabins.

As the name suggests, an expedition in this luxury train is actually like living in a palace on wheels. The train takes you to the exotic destinations of Rajasthan, like Jaipur, Udaipur, Ranthambore etc, along with a visit to the magnificent Taj Mahal.

More about the Train

There are 39 Deluxe Cabins and 2 Super Deluxe Cabins on the Palace on Wheels train (with a total capacity is of 82 passengers). Palace on Wheels is a fully air-conditioned luxury train, and each cabin has attached toilers, specially facilitated for the global luxury traveler. The Train is well equipped with all modern amenities such as wifi, mini pantry, music channel, a safe, wall to wall carpeting etc.

Each coach in the train will transport you to the historical era of grandeur. The carriages are uniquely named after a precious stone while the interiors aesthetics are aligned with royal eras from the past. There are two restro bar lounges as well as an ayurvedic spa facility in the train.

The Palace on Wheels also has two dining cars, known as “The Maharaja” and “The Maharani”, decorated in true Rajasthani style.
